PLIOGRIP Q 8013 (50%) METHYL ETHYL KETONE PEROXIDE
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The addition of 0.1% to 0.5% cobalt naphtha ate or octoate (6% solution) to unsaturated polyester resin followed by the addition of 1 – 2% PLASPEROX K - 7 results in a cure at room temperature.

CATALYST:
Catalyst or initiators for unsaturated polyester resin systems consist of organic peroxides. Unsaturated polyester resins will, given enough time, eventually set themselves. This rate of polymerisation reaction is too slow and will not reach desirable state of cure. In oder to get desirable cure in a give time, catalyst is used. There are variety of catalysts available for polyester crosslinking. The selection of catalyst depends upon the cure process techniques used and they are briefly classified as follows:
AMBIENT TEMPERATURE CURE:
The hand lay-up technique needs catalyst which initiates the polymerisation reaction at ambient temperature. Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide is a commonly used catalyst along with suitable accelerator for such applications.

MEK Peroxide is very explosive in its pure form and therefore it is always supplied after diluting with a plasticiser such as Dibutylphthalate. The MEKP initiates the polymerisation reaction of unsaturated polyester resin in presence of an accelerator such as Cobalt Octoate or Napthenate. The normal recommended usage is 1-2% of the resin weight for Laminates, and 2-3% for Gelcoats.
Storage :
It is recommended to store below 25° C in a free ventilated room. It should be kept away from accelerator. Avoid remixing of unused catalyst to the original container.
Caution:
Pliogrip Q 8013 should never be mixed with Pliogrip S 1021, as this would cause explosion. The Pliogrip S 1021 should be blended into the resin first. The Pliogrip Q 8013 should be added just before use.
